COURSE PROFILE: WOMEN AND MENTAL HEALTH (1-2 days)

The purpose of this day is to examine and consider Mental Health as it relates to women in our society and as a result develop a more sensitive and supportive way of providing services.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course participants should have understood:

  • The historic experience of women in Psychiatry
  • Women’s role in society and the impact of this in terms of their mental health
  • How women can be supported in their mental health
  • GENERAL COURSE CONTENT:

  • A journey through time: the history of women and mental health
  • A brief exploration of women and mental health from a variety of cultural perspectives
  • The role of women in our society-to include the family
  • The experience of women in our society:
  • Violence
    Discrimination
    Marginalistion

    Etc

  • How these experiences impact on women’s mental health
  • Who takes the blame?
  • Stigma, Social assumptions and expectations
  • Supporting women:
  • Advocacy and self advocacy, confidence building, assertiveness, social skills, political action ect

  • Promoting service user interest
