Course profile: Suicide & Self Harm
This challenging subject is approached from psychological, psychiatric, and sociological perspectives. Statistics help identify those most at risk. Participants will focus on the knowledge and skills required for preventative approaches and action. The course culminates in mapping out strategies for the management of actual suicidal risk as well as dealing with the consequences for everyone of a successful suicide

Definitions of Suicide and Attempted Suicide
Does Self-Harm naturally lead into Attempted Suicide?
Is it all just a cry for help?
Cultural, Religious and Ethnic implications of Suicide-Self-Harm?
Factors influencing: Mental Health, Alcohol, Substance misuse, e.t.c.
How do we identify people of groups who are vulnerable?
Are there signs, patterns of behaviour that can be observed?
Are these patterns different from Self-Harm and Suicide?
Can or do we help?
Managing the risks involved with people who Self-Harm?
Managing and coping with an attempted Suicide
Taking precautions
Living with/managing the consequences of a successful Suicide
Training methods:
These will include some lecture, workshop and group discussion. Case example will also be used. Careful attention will be paid to the sensitive nature of the subject.
