Learning objectives:

By the end of this course learners should:

  •  Understand the need for us to maintain this area on the support agenda for service users
  •  Be able to support service users in a sensitive, responsible, respectful, legal and ethical way regarding their sexual needs.

    • Definitions (Sexuality and Mental Health)
    • The range of “normal” expectations regarding sexuality
    • Sexuality as an issue in the development of Mental Health
    • Sexual abuse
    • Sexual oppression
    • Issues of discrimination (Including issues for Gay Men and Lesbians)
    • Women, Men and Sexuality
    • Women, Men, Sexuality and Mental Health
    • Institutional care and sexuality-abuse, neglect, gender roles
    • Drugs, medication and Sexuality
    • The move to the community; changing expectations
    • Difficulties experienced by users in the community
    • Conflict with the community
    • The role of residential and day care
    • Ethical and Good Practice considerations (Including confidentiality, protection, risk taking and normalisation)
    • A pro-active approach to meeting needs:
    Mixed gender settings Integration into the community
    Provision of special services Dating agencies
    Education and Sexual Health Gay Men and Lesbians
    Older service users
