Course Profile: Risk Assessment
This course examines issues of choice, control of situations, staff responsibilities, choice vs informed choice, & linking the risk assessment to the clients support plan. It also provides guidelines for practice involving deciding who will be involved, identifying risks, justifying conditions whilst at the same time safeguarding service users’ individual rights. The course aims to establish principles of risk assessment and help learners translate these practically
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this training learners should be able to:
• Understand what is meant by ‘risk’ and ‘assessment’
• Understand the use of staff power and its potential misuse
• Identify when risk is unacceptable (including Health and Safety issues) and
what action is appropriate when this is the case
• Understand how to articulate concerns about practice when risk is being
assessed and managed
Course content:
• Definitions of “Risk” and ‘Assessment’
• Dealing with issues of choice and control, staff power and its
potential misuse
• Staff responsibilities and their role in protection.
• How does the exercising of choice link with O’Brian’s model of
competencies and the principles of normalisation
• When is risk too much (including Health and Safety issues)
• Being sensitive to the perception of others-including family
• Becoming familiar with using a risk assessment form and who will be
involved
• Describing the person involved
• Establishing the prime issues
• Naming the risk factors
• Exploring what could be done to limit risk
• Justifying your decision as to whether the activity could go ahead,
when and what preparation needs to be done beforehand
• Safeguarding residents from staff heavy handedness including issues of
empowerment, assertiveness training and education, self advocacy and the role of
advocates
• Linking the risk assessment to your support plan
