Course Profile: Recruiting and Retaining Volunteers (1-2 days)

Whatever their motivation for wanting to engage with support and care services, Volunteers can be a very valuable resource in organisation. So as to recruit the best possible people, organisations need to approach recruitment of Volunteers with as much care as they would paid staff. This course aims to help them do this as well as maximise input by way of good retention principles. This is in the interest of all involved; especially vulnerable service users.

The Course Objectives:

By the end of this course learners should have understood:

  • The preparation that would be required to recruit Volunteers
  • How to work through the stages of the recruitment process within the principles of the Equal Opportunities Policy
  • How to support Volunteers so that good retention results

  • Identifying the role and function of Volunteers
  • Checking the appropriateness of this being a voluntary post; and the resources available for supporting Volunteers
  • Considering expenses and other terms
  • Drawing up a clear Job Description
  • Different ways of promoting volunteering opportunities
  • Application forms and short listing
  • The structure of the interview and who would be on the panel (to include service users/other Volunteers?)
  • Interviewing techniques
  • The Volunteering contract/agreement
  • Offering the post, taking up references & checks
  • Induction and initial training
  • Informal support and mentoring/shadowing
  • Supervision options (incl. pairs & group Supervision)
  • Offering other incentives
