Course Profile: Normalisation, “Ordinary Living, SRV and O’Brian

Those providing support for people with Learning Disabilities have often led in innovative practice.

The principles of Normalisation have become common practice and are being adopted by other services e.g. Mental Health, care of Older People. These principles have often been misunderstood and applied in a way that has not been helpful in the support of service users.

This course aims to clarify the underlying principles and examine practice that results form these. Participants will consider how their own practice can be enhanced

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course participants should understand:

  • The history of Normalisation from the 1950’s in Denmark through to practice in the UK today
  • Legislation and professional guidelines that apply in contemporary practice
  • How to translate theory into practice
  • Content:

  • What is normalisation? An ‘historical tour’ to include the Danish experience and the principles as defined by Nirje
  • Normalisation reaches the USA; an introduction to Wolfensberger and Social Role Valorisation
  • The UK experience (to include The Five Accomplishments)
  • The development of the model (to include the Kings Fund and principles of “Ordinary Living”)
  • Linkage with Person Centred Planning
  • Negative and Positive Vicious Circles
  • How does this all manifest in practice?
  • Dangers and consequences of attempting to adopt “pure” models
  • How can we develop an integrated and holistic model that is meaningful in the current climate and meaningful to service users
