Course profile: Moving and Handling of Loads

This course is aimed at all staff who are required to move objects or assist people while at work. The course will give a theoretical framework on how the body works, and how we can look after it, but the main focus will be on how this information can be applied to “real life” situations. Participants will be encouraged to share their experience and to participate in practical case studies relating to their work.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course participants should:

  • Understand the legal requirements and recommended guidance relating to lifting and moving objects.
  • Be familiar with the principles of good back care, moving and handling techniques and aware of equipment available.
  • Course content:

    • Injury related statistics
    • An overview of Manual Handling legislation and guidance
    • Anatomy, posture and back care
    • Top heavy movement and cumulative strain
    • Base movement and the semi squat position
    • The principles of good moving and handling techniques#
    • Creating a Risk Assessment, looking at:Task, Load/Person, Individual, Environment
    • An ergonomic approach
    • Practical exercises in moving loads/objects
    • Assisting people
    • Use of Handling equipment
    • Case studies and problem solving
