Course profile: Moving and Handling (1 day)

This course is aimed at staff who are required to assist and move people while at work. Participants will understand the legal requirements and recommended guidances relating to the subject. They will learn the principles of good back care, moving and handling techniques and the use of relevant handling tools.The course will give a theoretical framework on how the body works and how we can look after it, but the main focus will be on how this information can be applied to “real-life” situations. Participants will be encouraged to share their experience and to participate in using equipment and techniques recommended by the Royal College of Nursing (1998)

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training learners should be able to:

• Understand the legal requirements and recommended guidance relating to lifting/moving of people and objects
• Identify the principles of good back care, moving and handling techniques
• Identify a number of handling aids and equipment and understand their use in practical situations
• Identify Manual Handling problems that exist in their place of work and how basic Risk Assessment formulas can be applied to find solutions

Course content:

• Injury related statistics
• An overview of Manual Handling Legislation
• Top heavy movement and cumulative strain
• Anatomy, posture and back care
• The principles of good moving and handling techniques
• Base movement and the semi squat position
• Creating a Risk Assessment looking at:
Task, Load/Person, Individual, Environment.
• An ergonomic approach
• Practical session on moving a person, assisting a person to stand, escorting and lifting a load
• Advice on the use of wheelchairs and other mechanical aids
• Problem solving session
