Course profile: Mental Health & Younger people (1-3 days)

This course examines Mental Health in the context of working with younger people in residential and community based projects. It aims to help workers in the field develop their understanding of this challenging area of work and consequently develop their practice. Participants will reflect on a range of causal factors of mental distress within this group; including heredity, family and social learning. The course has an eclectic theory base and participants will have the opportunity to translate theory into practical approaches that might be utilised in their workplace.

The learning objectives:

By the end of this course participants should understand:

  • the causes of mental ill health amongst younger people
  • some of the personal experience of this Service User group
  • how to develop a more consistent and empathic approach when working with younger people
  • Course content:

  • Common mental disorders amongst younger people
  • Is Mental Health inherited?
  • How much do parents and families influence potential for mental ill health?
  • Other social factors (e.g. the experience at school, peer group)
  • The impact of trauma, abuse and separation
  • Developmental issues (including puberty, internal conflict, self image, self esteem etc)
  • Personality Disorders amongst younger people
  • The link between substance use and Mental Health (Is there one?)
  • Young people and their needs (and additional needs for those experiencing mental distress)
  • Developing Good Practice
