Course profile: Mental Health & Older People

This course aims to provide participants with a background to mental health issues and conditions that have particular impact on more mature people or tendency for later onset. After considering the overall process of ageing and the effect on mental health the croup will consider specific diagnosis of conditions. The course will then offer the opportunity for considerations of the medical and social support that is available and what particular support participants could offer in their own workplaces.’

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course participants should be able to understand:

  • The effects of the ageing process
  • The signs and symptoms of a range of mental health conditions, particularly the Dementias
  • What the medical model offers by way of treatment
  • What social support is available?
  • How to support older people
  • Content:

  • How might ageing affect the individual? To include:
  • Social, physical, sexual, financial, spiritual, occupational & other areas

  • How might older people be stereotyped and disadvantaged?
  • The impact on the individual of infantalisation
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Particular mental health conditions common to older people, to include` anxiety and depression and “Old Age Schizophrenia”
  • People who have had long term mental health needs
  • The Dementias:
  • What are the different Dementias?
