Course profile: Managing Performance (2 days)

The failure to respond appropriate to underperformance can lead to staff discontent, a poorly functioning service and in the end, costly litigation. This course aims to ensure that managers approach this sensitive area in a professional and confident manner; mindful of the law and Good Practice.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course participants should:

  • understand the role of the Manager
  • be able to identify what is required from a Manager (responsibilities/skills)
  • be more effective in: assertiveness, negotiation, conflict resolution, communication, delegation and time management

  • Why do we mean by performance and why does it require managing?
  • Signs of over/under supervision
  • What are objectives and standards?
  • Setting standards: what do we need to know?
  • What constitutes an effective performance objective and how can it be monitored?
  • Signs that a staff member may have a performance problem and factors that might lead to this
  • How to identify reasons for poor performance (Ability, Aptitude, Attitude) and strategies for managing each
  • The importance of effective investigation and assessment
  • The role of the disciplinary procedure
  • Identifying resistance to change and effective management techniques
  • Systems and structures for measuring/monitoring performance
  • Giving feedback
  • The importance of documentation in the performance management process
