Course profile: Equal Opportunities for Managers (2 days)

Equal Opportunities is an area that is often misunderstood thus leading to confusion, resentment and occasionally in employment disputes. For Managers the task of working in an Equalities framework can be a very daunting task and litigious publicity can add to them perceiving equalities as the “enemy” rather than a framework to aid in the development of an anti-oppressive culture. This course aims to provide Managers with a clear understanding of the background issues and equip them to take a lead in the promotion of Equal Opportunities, Diversity and Anti Discrimination

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training learners should:

• Understand how behaviour, language & humor potentially oppresses individuals and groups • Identify and understand anti-discriminatory legislation from a managerial perspective
• Understand the Managers role and responsibilities in relation to Equal Opportunities

• What do we mean by Equal Opportunities, Anti-Discriminatory Practice and a range of related definitions?
• Understanding what it feels like to be on the receiving end of discrimination
• How do we potentially discriminate and oppress in society and at work?
• The PCS model of discrimination and the cycle of oppression
• The use of terminology, language and humor
• Cultures, attitudes and behaviour that might oppress
• What can be done to develop a culture that values Diversity?
• The Law
• How we interpret the Law in the workplace:
- Direct Discrimination - Indirect Discrimination
- Oppression - Harassment
- Detriment - Disadvantage
• Working within the law
- Recruitment - Training and Development
- Terms & Conditions - Dealing with challenges
• Developing policy
