Course profile: Managing Aggression
(1-3 days)This very difficult subject is approached in a sensitive and creative way and aims to help participants develop safe practice. The cycle of aggression is explored from predisposing factors, identifying risk and through to prevention of crisis. The safe management of violent incidents and talk down techniques are taught. (This course does not teach physical restraint. This is taught on a different course)
This course is an element in the Diploma in Residential Care (accredited by The Open College Network)
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course learners should:
• have developed a positive and pro-active approach in pursuit
of avoiding violence
• have understood the factors that promote the safe management of aggression (in
a framework of sound ethics and good practice)
Course Content:
• The origins of violence in developmental, psychological,
social, familial, cultural, pathological, personality, gender, sexuality,
ethnicity and environmental cont
• Healthy aggression and working creatively with aggression
• Living with fear: Violence experienced by women and minority groups
• Cultures of violence in Institutions
• Factors that contribute towards violent behaviour (with particular emphasis on
verbal/non-verbal communication and the physical environment)
• Mental health factors
• Avoiding violence
• Listening as a means of diffusing violent situations
• Managing aggression safely & within the legal framework
• Working with people who habitually behave in a damaging way
• The rights of the carer
• Managing and learning after the event (including caring for the victim/other
service users)
• Development of appropriate policy & the importance of record keeping
• Working creatively with aggression
