The complexity of Learning Disability is extensive. This course will offer you some insight into the issues relating to Learning Difficulties including causation, the different named syndromes and the difficulties encountered by many labeled as having a Learning Disability”. Attitudes, assumptions and current practice are examined

By the end of the course learners should understand:

  • What is a learning disability and how is it different to a Mental Heath need
  • The key principles of support practice
  • Course content:

    • Defining “Learning Difficulties” and brief medical perspective (including the use of medication)
    • Legislation
    • Identifying needs
    • The history of caring for people with learning Difficulties; abuse & marginalisation
    • The move the Community: Challenges for all concerned
    • Residential Care: The role of the residential staff and others involved
    • Advocates and advocacy
    • Principles of “Normalisation” and “Ordinary Living”
    • Working with families
    • The role of the Key Worker & the relationship between the Key Worker and Support Planning
    • Physical, social, recreational, sexual, psychological, spiritual and occupational needs
