Course Profile: Introduction to Counselling (1-3 days)

This course is designed for all who work with people in supportive settings. Many would consider that the ability to listen to service users is the key to effective work. Whilst the focus of the course is counseling, this course does not attempt to train participants as counselors, but rather to be more effective in their active listening skills at work.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course participants should have:

Gained an understanding of the theoretical frameworks that underpin the counseling process
Understood how to translate theory into practice

Course content:

• What is counseling?
• Why support workers cannot provide formal Counseling
• The difference between Counseling and Therapy
• The humanistic models
• The work of Carl Rogers
• An eclectic model that can appropriately and safely be applied in all settings
• The dangers of unskilled work applied with vulnerable people
• “Counseling” people with challenging behaviour or with challenging Mental Health needs
• Application of learned skills
• Using active listening skills in group settings
