Course profile: Interviewing Skills (2
days)
Personal bias and unskilled interviewing can not only lead to inappropriate
appointments being made but can rob organisations of the opportunity to employ
valuable staff. Not only can this be unfair, but can also be very costly to the
organisation. A range of legislation and Good Practice guidelines aim to ensure
that this activity is conducted in a fair way. This course aims to ensure that
managers are up to date, not only with relevant legislation, but also with the
corresponding required skills.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
Understand the legislative framework within which
recruitment interviews operate
Demonstrate an understanding of different selection
methods, including different types of interviews, and their appropriateness
Plan the interview process
Demonstrate an awareness of the impact that first
impressions, stereotyping and prejudice can have on the interview process
Produce a range of interview questions appropriate to a
specific post
Open, chair, participate and close an interview
Demonstrate active listening skills
Lead and contribute to a panel decision regarding the
offer of a job to a successful candidate

Selection interviews – how to make them as effective as
possible
Supplementary selection methods
Panel Interviews: advantages, disadvantages; the role
of the Chair, conducting panel interviews
Planning interviews: organisationally and personally
Questioning Techniques and how to develop appropriate
questions for a post
What is Active Listening?
Recording skills: what and how to record
Making a decision and staying within the law
