Course profile: Equal Opportunities for Interviewers (1 day)

Personal bias and unskilled interviewing can not only lead to inappropriate appointments being made but can rob organisations of the opportunity to employ valuable staff. Not only can this be unfair, but can also be very costly to the organisation. A range of legislation and Good Practice guidelines aim to ensure that this activity is conducted in a fair way. This course aims to ensure that managers are up to date, not only with relevant legislation, but also with the corresponding required skills.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course participants should:

Understand the key legislation (other than discrimination legislation) that affects the recruitment and selection process
Be able to identify current and proposed discrimination legislation
Know the expectations each piece of legislation places on employers
Be able to describe the role of the Advert, Short listing process, Job Description and Person Specification in ensuring anti-discriminatory practice
Be able to formulate interview questions in an anti-discriminatory fashion
Understand a framework for reaching a decision regarding appointment based on objective analysis of interviewee’s performance.

Course content:

How the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974), Asylum and Immigration Act (1996) and the Data Protection Act (1998) impact upon the recruitment and selection process.
The difference between Direct and Indirect Discrimination
When is it lawful to discriminate? (Genuine Occupational Qualifications)
Discrimination on the grounds of: Sex, Race, Age, Disability; Religion/belief and Sexual Orientation
The impact of the above on the recruitment and selection process
What are the stages of recruitment and selection and how can discrimination occur within each stage? The group will explore the advert, the job description, the person specification, the short listing process, interviewing and making an decision
The benefits of good practice/effects of poor practice
