Course profile: Epilepsy-Good Practice

After gaining a clear medical perspective of the causation and treatment for Epilepsy, participants will gain expertise in the safe management of seizures. This will not only focus on practical elements but will likewise examine holistic approaches to supporting people experiencing Epilepsy. This would include the longer term support for service users

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course participants should :
• Understand what is Epilepsy
• Be able to Identify the cycle of emotional and psychological stages that individuals go through, in order to provide the right support
• Understand the different types of Epilepsy and Seizures

• Definition and causes of Epilepsy
• Forms of Epilepsy
• Classification of Seizures
• Possible triggers of seizures
• How to respond during a seizure
• Recording
• Medication and Anti-epileptic medication;
• Neurological implications
• Problems arising as a result of seizure
• The experience of the individual
• The experience of partners/family/friends/carers
• Experience in the community
