• A brief classification of Mental Illness
• A brief review of signs and symptoms
• Definitions of alcohol and substance misuse
• Mental Health linked with alcohol/substance issues
• The process of alcoholism/substance use
• Who it affects
• The effects of alcohol use on individuals:
• Social • Cultural • Psychological
• Spiritual • Physical • Sexual
• Financial • Occupational etc
• Specific issues facing people with Mental Health needs and alcohol misuse
• The effect on others (including violence and domestic violence)
• Treatments available (A medical model)
• Other help and support available
• The role of the care worker in supporting service users
• An approach to working with this issue
