Course profile: Dual Diagnosis (Learning Disability & Mental Health)
Assessment, Planning & Intervention
This course is designed for staff at all levels in both Learning Disability and Mental Health services, with the view to explore some of the complex issues relating to Dual Diagnosis.
By the end of the workshop delegates will have broadened their professional networks and identified shared strategies of assessment, planning and intervention for service users with the dual diagnosis of Learning Disability and Mental Health.

The need for a multi agency and multi
disciplinary approach
What may be presented within the concept of Dual Diagnosis
Staffs responsibilities
A range of the issues that are faced by practitioners in response to a
service user who presents with an actual or possible dual diagnosis
The processes of multi-disciplinary assessment, planning and intervention.
Practical strategies when supporting service users
Course content:
During group activities we will explore
what is meant by and causations of the following:
What is a Learning Disability?
What is Mental Health?
What do we mean by Dual Diagnosis?
This will be followed by a presentation referring
to definitions in the Mental Health act and the World Health International
Classifications
The perspectives of mainstream Mental Health professionals and Learning
Disability services
Exploration of the anxieties in working with this service user group (shared
experiences)
Difficulties faced by professionals in diagnosing
and what we can do to aid the effectiveness of a clear diagnosis.
In aiding the process we will explore a range of assessment tools uses by
professionals in the field of Mental Health and Behavioural Analysis.
We will explore therapeutic interventions ranging from medication, to cognitive behavioural therapy and many more. This section will also include the capacity to consent to treatment, confidentiality and the limitations of some therapies.
Conflict between agencies and what we can do to enable a positive outcome in joint working.
