Course Profile: An Introduction to Drama Therapy

This course is designed for people who work with service users, or for anyone wishing to know more about Drama Therapy. The course is mainly experiential allowing staff to experience drama therapy on a practical level before applying it to their work place.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop participants should have understood:

• The principles of Drama Therapy
• The benefits of Drama Therapy
• The need for appropriate and “safe” application of Drama Therapy techniques with Service Users
• The resources and tools that aid Drama Therapy techniques

Workshop Content:

• What is Drama therapy?
• What are the benefits of Drama Therapy?
• How Drama Therapy sessions are facilitated
• A range of Drama Therapy techniques that can be used
• How to plan a session
• Health and Safety applied to Drama Therapy
• Other creative mediums

Working Methods:

A range of training and Drama Therapy techniques will be utilised during this day including:
• Flip chart • Handouts • Small group work
• Larger group work • Pairs work • Role Play
• Improvisation • Movement • Games
• Music • Art • Story telling
• Relaxation & sensory experience

The facilitator: Emma Cohn

After a first career in Theatre Emma studied Drama Therapy and worked with groups of people with Learning Disabilities and Mental Health needs in a variety of settings. Emma’s straining style is gentle, warm, supportive and creative.
