Course Profile: Disability Awareness
Lack of understanding of the issues faced by service users with disabilities/sensory impairment can result in poor support being provided, patronising and disempowering care and indeed abuse. This course aims to equip participants with a basic framework of knowledge and skills so as to work in a sensitive and respectful manner.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course participants should be able to understand:
What service users with disabilities might experience
How services could undermine the growth of these people
How to practice in a respectful and empowering way
Course content:
Definitions: What is a physical disability? What is a sensory impairment?
The range of disabilities/impairments
An historical perspective of support received by people with physical
disabilities and sensory impairment
The current context
The legal framework (to include the Disabled Person’s Act)
How a physical disability could impact on the development of the individual
The needs of people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments;
different to other people? If so, how?
