Course profile: Counseling in Mental Health (3 days)

This course is an element of The Diploma in Residential Care (Accredited by the Open College Network)

After defining mental illness and exploring the possible experience of service users this course looks at the role and function of counseling, finally establishing some of the skills and knowledge required to undertake a counseling task with service users experiencing mental health difficulties. Particular attention will be paid to the communication and negotiation skills necessary to work creatively with people in distress as well as the limitations of the residential care role. The course focuses on a wide range of theoretical approaches

Review of symptoms of Mental ill Health
Challenges for service users
Challenges for staff
The basic elements of Person Centred Counselling
The use of Empathy and Advanced Empathy
Person Centred Counselling adapted to the mental health setting
A review of other theoretical approaches (including Transactional Analysis, Behaviourist, Cognitive approaches)
Boundaries
Confusion of Role
Counselling vs the use of Counselling Skills
Good Practice and Ethical Issues
