Course profile: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (2-3 days)

This course aims to provide a greater awareness of Cognitive development, leading to increased understanding of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course participants should:
                Have gained knowledge of what Cognitive development is
                Be aware of theories, and ‘nature versus nurture’
                Identify the stages of cognitive development
                Gained an insight into theories and practice such as Piaget
                Identified what Cognitive Therapy is
                Underline the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
                Gain a greater understanding of ‘ Therapeutic relationship’
                Outline the goals of cognitive behavioral assessment
                Have a good knowledge of when to use and not to use CBT
                Gain a greater understanding of how therapy is positively applied in relation to some of the most common psychiatric disorders.

Course content day one:

The birth of a human being: what makes us who we are?
Ideas, Theories and Prejudices. Nature versus Nurture. Free will Versus Predetermination.
Cognitive psychology and cognitive development.
Jean Piaget an overview
Accommodation, Assimilation and Equilibration
Stages of Cognitive Developmen
Challenges to Piagets Model.

Day two:

A recap on what we mean by Cognitive development and what the stages are
Cognitive factors, observational learning and social learning theory
Cognitive Decline and changes in cognitive functioning
What is cognitive therapy
An overview of the first 20 years (1960s & 1970s)
An overview of the second twenty years (1980s & 1990s)
Development and principles of cognitive-behavioral treatments
Therapeutic relationship, Cognitive behavioral assessment

Day three:

Review day 2
When and when not to use cognitive behavioral therapy
Dealing with: Anxiety states: Panic and generalized anxiety
Phobic disorders
Obsess ional disorders
Depression
