Course Profile: Advocacy & Whistleblowing (1 day)

This course is specifically designed for those who wish to develop their advocacy skills rather than be formal advocates. After looking at a range of definitions participants will look at the need for and principles of advocacy in a variety of settings. The need for effective advocacy skills within teams and particularly the residential setting is highlighted. Participants will have the opportunity to develop assertiveness skills to apply when performing this task

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course learners should have understood:

• the link between poor assertiveness skills and the resulting conflict, dysfunction, inefficiency, poor work practice, discontent.
• basic assertiveness techniques and ideas to consider for future development.

 

Course Content:

• Exercises designed to help participants relax in order to maximise participation and enjoyment.
• Exercises designed to help the group share experiences of the effects resulting from lack of assertiveness.
• Exploration of the components of being assertive.
• Considering the psychological sources that lead to people finding difficulty in asserting themselves.
• A Transactional Analysis model that might to help participants understand the link between assertiveness, aggression, passive aggression, poor self- image and low self-esteem.
• The theory of giving and receiving feedback in a respectful framework.
• What we mean by Advocacy and the worker’s professional & ethical responsibilities
• Limitations and conflict of interest
• Whistleblowing-why and how
• The value of being assertive for service users.
